Prevent Continuous Restarts Caused by Windows Updates

Posted by SpeedLine Support on May 17, 2018 10:10:20 AM

Some of you may have experienced continuous restarts (also known as a "boot loop") after recent Microsoft Windows updates of your SpeedLine stations, and potentially your home computers too.

These restarts are being caused by a conflict with the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, which does not allow the update to finish if it is running. We recommend taking steps to disable this service before the next Windows Update release.

To prevent future occurrences of this issue, please follow the steps outlined below to disable the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service on each of your computers.

To Prevent Continuous Restarts (Boot Loop) after a Windows Update:

  1. Click the Windows logo on the taskbar, or press the Windows key.
  2. In the search field, type Services.msc.
  3. Click Services in the result.
  4. In the Services list, find and double-click Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.
  5. Set the Startup type to Disabled.
  6. Make sure the Service Status is Stopped, and if not, click the Stop button.
  7. Click OK, and close the Services window. Windows updates will no longer cause continuous restarts due to conflicts with the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.

If you continue to experience the boot loop issue after doing this, additional steps are required. Please contact SpeedLine Support at 1-888-400-9185 for assistance.

Tip: Whenever possible, schedule Windows updates for a time when your store is closed.
