Strengthen Your Passwords for Restaurant Security

We encounter passwords in almost every area of our lives. Whether for online banking, education, social media, or at work, passwords control access to much of the information we need every day.

You understand the wealth of information available in your POS system, including important financial information. So you recognize how critical your password can be in securing your restaurant data. Ask yourself—is your password strong enough? Check these 4 tips for creating and managing passwords to enhance restaurant security:

1. Defend Your Data

When creating a password, choose something that would be difficult for even those who know you to guess.  Make it at least 8 characters long, and the more random, the better! And remember—don’t share your passwords with anyone unless you can confirm their identity as well as the reason for requiring access.


2. Make it Memorable

Writing on a scrap piece of paper does not make it memorable—it makes it accessible to others.  When selecting a password, think outside the box, and look for inspiration beyond a pet’s name. Perhaps a lyric or quote from your favorite song or movie. Include capital letters, numbers, and symbols for added security. And use it right away: the more frequently you use it, the easier it will be to remember it.


3. Changing Your Password

Changing your password at regular intervals helps reduce the impact of a password leak. Try changing important passwords monthly—and not just a letter or two. Changing the password in its entirety increases the integrity of the new password. 


4. Storing Your Password

Instead of writing down a password, select another method of storing your password. Keep it on record with SpeedLine support, or in a sealed envelope in your safe. Or use a password manager app like LastPass (there are many options online). Keep in mind that passwords recorded in a file on your desktop will be easily compromised by hackers—so play it safe!
