Verify Time Zone Settings for New Permanent Standards

Written by SpeedLine Support | Oct 30, 2026, 7:40:01 PM

In 2026, several regions across Canada adopted new permanent year-round time standards, ending seasonal clock changes.

If you live in an affected region, ensure your Windows system is using the appropriate regional time zone before November 1. Microsoft has released Windows updates to support these changes.

Instructions: How to Check and Update Windows 11 Settings

First, ensure Windows is up to date. Then verify that your system is configured to use the appropriate regional time zone:

  1. Open Date & Time Settings

    1. Click the Start Menu and open Settings (or press Win + I).

    2. Select Time & language from the left-hand navigation menu.

    3. Click on Date & time.

  2. Disable Automatic DST and Automatic Time Zone Selection

    1. If Set time zone automatically is enabled, verify that Windows has selected the appropriate regional time zone.

    2. If Windows has not selected the correct time zone, turn off Set time zone automatically and select the appropriate time zone manually.

  3. Select the Matching Permanent Time Zone Offset

    1. Click the Time zone drop-down menu.

    2. Select the time zone matching your new regional standard:

      • Most of British Columbia: Select (UTC-07:00) Pacific Time (British Columbia)

      • Alberta & Parts of the Northwest Territories: Select (UTC-06:00) Mountain Time (Alberta)

      • Manitoba & Northwest Ontario: Select (UTC-05:00) (Manitoba)

Note on static zones: Regions such as Yukon, Saskatchewan, Arizona, and Hawaii were already on permanent time prior to this year and do not require setting updates if previously configured correctly.
